Browns switch from Quinn

Two years ago, the Cleveland Browns turned their woeful offense over to Derek Anderson and won 10 games.

Coach Eric Mangini can only hope it happens again.

With his first season in Cleveland already unraveling, Mangini benched Brady Quinn in favor of Anderson, who rode a similar opportunity in 2007 to an appearance in the Pro Bowl. The Browns (0-3) have only one touchdown and 29 points in Quinn’s three starts, and Mangini has seen enough to believe Anderson deserves a chance to show what he can do.

Mangini benched Quinn at halftime of the Browns’ 34-3 loss in Baltimore on Sunday. He put in Anderson, who was able to move the ball with more consistency.

“What I’m looking for is for us to improve offensively,” Mangini said. “I’m not by any stretch saying it’s been all Brady. That’s not the case at all. I just think Derek did some things that were positive, and we need to improve in that area and I think he can help us improve in that area, and that’s really what the decision is based on.”

Anderson lost a summer-long competition to Quinn, the former first-round draft pick from Notre Dame who some Browns fans have been begging to see get a chance since he was drafted.

But Quinn has yet to produce big plays or points and Mangini couldn’t wait any longer.

Rams may go

with Boller

Marc Bulger did not practice Wednesday, increasing the likelihood the winless St. Louis Rams will go with backup Kyle Boller at quarterback Sunday in San Francisco.

Coach Steve Spagnuolo has not ruled out Bulger, who has a bruised rotator cuff in his throwing shoulder. Bulger rode a stationary bicycle and did exercises along with safety James Butler and offensive tackle Jason Smith, both recovering from knee injuries.

Boller threw two touchdown passes in the second quarter Sunday before the Rams’ comeback fizzled in a 36-17 loss to the Green Bay Packers. Boller had 42 starts for Baltimore but sat out all of last season after a shoulder injury.

Adams goes three for three on fines

Dallas Cowboys left tackle Flozell Adams was fined by the NFL for the third straight week, the latest for kicking at Carolina defensive end Julius Peppers.

Adams was docked $7,500. He was fined $5,000 for an unnecessary roughness penalty in the opener and $12,500 for two plays against the New York Giants.

Running back Felix Jones was fined $5,000 for an attempted leg whip. Jones didn’t practice because of a strained ligament in his left knee.

Injury report

LaDainian Tomlinson was back at practice for the first time since spraining his right ankle during the season opener, an encouraging sign for a San Diego Chargers team that has struggled to run the ball. Tomlinson said that he hopes he can play in Sunday night’s game at Pittsburgh. . . . Cincinnati Bengals starting linebacker Rey Maualuga sat out practice because of a sprained left knee. The rookie from USC, who was injured during the second half of Cincinnati’s 23-20 victory over Pittsburgh, walked with a pronounced limp. . . . Miami Dolphins quarterback Chad Pennington says he’ll undergo surgery soon to repair his season-ending shoulder injury, and he will start rehabilitation before deciding whether to retire or continue his career.
