The college football career of one of Florida International’s all-time leaders in touchdown catches and overall receptions is over after his girlfriend allegedly poured boiling water on him.

Senior tight end and NFL prospect Jonnu Smith suffered burns to his head, neck, back, a shoulder and an arm after being attacked by Mary Gaspar, according to police reports.

Gaspar, who is five months pregnant with the couple’s child, told police she and Smith had been arguing about the amount of attention he was paying to her and their relationship all day on Oct. 31.

“Feeling extremely emotional and stressed,” she told police, Gaspar boiled a pot of water and poured it on Smith in his dorm room, then started hitting him with open hands.

She was arrested two days later and has pleaded not guilty to charges of felony aggravated battery.

Smith, whose attorney declined comment to the Associated Press, was hospitalized but is said to have been spotted on campus since the incident.

He has 39 catches for 441 yards and three touchdowns this season. His 17 career touchdown catches are third all-time for Florida International and his 175 receptions are fourth.
