33-year-old Ryan McDonough hired as Phoenix Suns GM

Ryan McDonough started in the NBA as a 23-year-old special assistant for basketball operations for the Boston Celtics.

Now, 10 years later, he’s the 33-year-old general manager for the Phoenix Suns.

McDonough, who served as Celtics assistant general manager the last three years, was announced as the replacement for fired Phoenix GM Lance Blanks on Tuesday.

“His natural leadership and communication skills will serve the Suns well,” Suns President of Basketball Operations Lon Babby said of McDonough. “And his prodigious work ethic and ability to identify talent will enable us to take full advantage of the 10 draft choices, including six in the first round, that we have over the next three years. We welcome his championship pedigree to our organization.”

McDonough certainly sounds like the guy to help the Suns figure out what to do with all those draft choices. He worked for five years in the Celtics’ scouting department and another two as director of player personnel.

The Suns are coming off a 25-57 season, the second-worst in franchise history.
