Las Vegas: Say goodbye to mermaids, deep-fried Twinkies on Fremont Street

Three long-standing attractions in downtown Las Vegas -- Glitter Gulch, La Bayou and Mermaids -- are calling it quits. The down-market venues along the Fremont Street Experience are set to close June 27.

The properties have been sold to downtown developers Derek and Greg Stevens, who plan to build a new hotel-casino on the block.

If Vietnam veteran and activist Jan Scruggs has his way, one day there will be a memorial on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., to honor living veterans as well as those killed in Iraq and Afghanistan.

I enjoyed staying at the Park Hyatt Hotel on 57th Street. The elegant Russian Tea Room is directly across the street. My friend had coffee ($8) while I enjoyed hot tea ($8). We loved the four delicious madeleines that we each received and admired the Old-World paintings on the walls.
