San Francisco: Clift Hotel package includes breakfast, Wi-Fi and bikes

The Clift Hotel in San Francisco is offering a spring package that lasts through summer. And here’s a new freebie for all guests: use of a European-style bicycle to take a spin around the city.

The deal: The Spring Package starts at $240 plus tax and includes full breakfast in the hotel’s Velvet Room and free Wi-Fi. The hotel suggests reserving the bicycles -- a lightweight Public J7 model known as a “Dutch bike” -- when you book a room to make sure they’re available.

The Clift’s vintage facade was given a much ballyhooed, hip upgrade almost a decade ago from design duo Ian Schrager and Philippe Starck. Some travel guides say the rooms at this 1913 hotel run small, and most point to the elegant Redwood Room bar as the place to see and to be.

When: The package is good through Sept. 5, based on availability.

Tested: I went to the hotel’s website and found a better-than-advertised rate for the package over Easter weekend. For a stay from April 22 to 24, a room with a king-sized bed started at $184 plus tax -- a bit more than the $169 plus tax best available rate for the same nights without the package. Still, with Wi-Fi normally costing $14.95 a night plus the breakfast, you come out ahead on this one.
