6:13 p.m.: Backstage, Streep is in her element. She deftly handles a question about accents and voices (she practices by ‘listening in’ to people in New York restaurants), and of an interest in tackling a role on Broadway, says she’d always thought, ‘When my children grew up and went to college I could think about doing that, so I’m looking.’ Then she gives an articulate answer about Julia Child’s reaction to Julie Powell. ‘Julia was a sunny personality but she really took this quite seriously.’

She even gets in a little dig at bloggers and the constant scrutiny on the roles that actors take on, which she calls a ‘relentless drag’ because it makes one too self-aware of who they’re playing, As for winning so many awards, she manages to sound gracious and deserving without seeming self-satisfied. ‘It means a great deal to have the approbation of the people in my community. I don’t live in the glare of the spotlight. I live my outside life and come in to this room,’ she said, as several reporters marveled at the balance of confidence and humility. She’s so good at this awards game it doesn’t seem fair.
