The day after he and his massive white sideburns won a second championship at the World Beard and Moustache Championships, Lake Tahoe, Calif., resident Toot Joslin sat down with me in Anchorage to discuss facial hair competition, the importance of costume and attitude, and why he stays away from open flames.

A swimming pool contractor by trade, Joslin narrowly missed medaling at his first attempt in Carson City, Nev., in 2003, took top honors in the Sideburns category at the 2005 Berlin games but failed to repeat the win at the 2007 Brighton games.
