When’s the best time to buy clothes online? Shop It To Me cracks that code

My e-mail inbox has more than 1,400 unread messages in it. No, I’m not that popular. I just get massive numbers of e-mail newsletters that inform me of everything from the latest restaurant opening to discount trips to Hawaii. (Or would if I read them.) The fashion mailings are full of hot tips on sales, but today’s ‘low, low prices’ could be slashed tomorrow, and it’s hard to know when to spring for a new outfit. What if tomorrow’s e-mail has better deals? What if prices get even lower?
So I was happy to see that Shop It to Me, one of the many tempting clothing sales notifiers, has broken it down.
The staff at the free newsletter, which culls online shops and offers personalized sales alerts based on your favorite brands, interests and sizes, checked their sales data on more than 150,000 clothing items from 70-plus retailers during the 2007 calendar year. Searching for any of the following items? Get your credit cards ready. Here’s when they say are the best times to check out:
- Jeans, skirts and dresses: Fridays. ‘Denim that went on sale on Fridays averaged 40.8% off, compared with 34.4% off on Mondays,’ according to a Shop It to Me press release. ‘Skirts and dresses averaged 42% off, compared with 28% and 32% off on Saturdays.’
- Shoes: Fridays and Saturdays. Markdowns are an average 43% off compared with 36% earlier in the week.
- Swimwear: Saturdays. Bargains dove to 46%, instead of the 36% discount listed midweek.
- Handbags: Tuesdays. If you’ve got any money left over from the weekends, you can always buy a purse to put it in come Tuesday, when deals averaged more than 41% off. (Although Fridays were a very close second, when discounts averaged 40%).
Hmm, Fridays are one of the most popular sale days, you say. Those are usually paydays, right?
