Celeb hairdresser Serge Normant launches a hair care line

Celebrity hairdresser Serge Normant, who tends to the considerable manes of Julia Roberts and Sarah Jessica Parker, among others, has launched a tightly edited hair care collection that includes a pair of products that could be destined for cult status.
The eponymous collection -- sold at Space NK, Barneys New York and through Normant’s website -- includes a shampoo, conditioner, pomade, conditioning treatment and hair spray, but also boasts a versatile dry shampoo and a shine-inducing dry hair oil.
‘I couldn’t imagine doing a line without a dry shampoo,’ said Normant. ‘It’s an old thing that’s become new again. The way I use it, it’s not just to revive [the hair], it’s also to give it a quality and texture that’s a root volumizer. Even when I do the hair freshly washed, right before going out I add it to give hair an extra boost.’
Normant formulated the line’s shine-inducing hair oil ‘in a way to go with it,’ he said. ‘With dry shampoo there’s always a little powder deposit -- especially with brunettes. And dry oil, when you put it on, it’s weightless and it gives back that sheen and natural shine.’
As for the shampoo, it’s sulfate-free, so ‘it’s not stripping your hair down too much,’ said Normant. ‘We’re doing so much straightening these days, we don’t need something that makes it feel so squeaky clean you won’t be able to manage your hair any more.’
The New York-based hairdresser, who took over the John Frieda salon on Melrose Place in 2008 after Sally Hershberger exited, said the eight-piece line -- which ranges in price from $24 to $60 -- encompasses what he considers to be his core products.
‘I felt like I could address lots of different hair qualities with these [products],’ said Normant. ‘And I didn’t want to create anything too strong. Even with the hair spray -- if you wanted to brush it out, it wouldn’t feel like you have hair spray in your hair. Everything has a lightness to it, but you can acheive great things.’
