A diverse and occasionally surreal mix of film and TV personalities mingled casually on the red carpet in the hour before the Golden Globes dinner was set to begin.

‘Black Swan’ director Darren Aronofsky hugged ’30 Rock’ star Alec Baldwin. Jennifer Lawrence’s mother told reporters she thought her daughter had stayed well-adjusted and down to earth even as the actress became an ‘it girl’ for her nominated performance in indie drama ‘Winter’s Bone.’ And Edie Falco said she felt no nervousness because of (or is it despite?) the fact that she doesn’t drink.

Elsewhere, nominees and stars took a different approach, sipping on miniature bottles of Moet as they posed and made small talk on the carpet before the ceremony was set to begin.

Maybe most notable was ‘The Social Network’ producer Scott Rudin holding court at a midway point on the carpet with about a half-dozen film-world types, as just a few feet away ‘The King’s Speech’ director Tom Hooper unassumingly walked by. The moment seemed to encapsulate perhaps the most interesting race of the night: The two films are considered front-runners for best picture in the drama category.
