Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi said he was alarmed by the escalation of violence in Libya and called the use of force by the military regime to suppress protests ‘unacceptable.’

‘The European Union and the international community must make every effort to prevent the Libyan crisis from degenerating into a civil war that will have consequences difficult to predict,’ Berlusconi said Monday in an e-mailed statement distributed by his office.
