Sen. John Kerry on Tuesday urged all American and international oil companies to immediately cease operations in Libya, where the death toll mounted as the country’s leader, Moammar Kadafi, reportedly attacked civilian crowds with tanks and warplanes.

All the oil companies should stop operations ‘until violence against civilians cease,’ Kerry, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said in a statement to Reuters.

‘The Obama administration also should consider reimposing U.S. sanctions’ that were lifted during President George W. Bush’s administration, Kerry said.
