L.A. Philharmonic names Lionel Bringuier as resident conductor

The Los Angeles Philharmonic will announce Tuesday that it has named Lionel Bringuier to the new post of resident conductor. Bringuier joined the orchestra in 2007 as assistant conductor and was named associate conductor two seasons later. His contract as resident conductor is through the 2012-13 season.

Bringuier, 24, hails from Nice, France. His tenure as associate conductor was scheduled to end at the conclusion of the 2010-11 season. The new title is a reflection of Bringuier’s time with the orchestra beyond his previous appointments, according to a spokeswoman.

Bringuier also holds the position of music director of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Castilla y León in Valladolid, Spain.

‘The Los Angeles Philharmonic has allowed me to grow and develop as a musician and it’s a pleasure to extend that relationship in a place that I consider home,’ Bringuier said in a statement. ‘I’m also honored to continue to be able to work with Gustavo [Dudamel], and be able to learn from him.’

The spokeswoman for the orchestra said that Bringuier’s new post will entail essentially the same responsibilities as his previous roles.

Bringuier has served as a standby conductor for concerts and has led concerts at Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Hollywood Bowl. He is scheduled to conduct the orchestra at the Hollywood Bowl on Tuesday in a concert featuring pianist Yuja Wang.

Bringuier was just 21 when he began with the L.A. Philharmonic, making him the youngest assistant conductor in the orchestra’s history.

He memorably filled in for Dudamel in a 2010 concert at Disney Hall when the music director injured his neck.
