Waiting for rain

Saturday evening was overcast and cool. I had a big bowl of onions that were starting to go soft, so I sliced them thick, pulled out my cast-iron Dutch oven and set them to cook over gentle heat. A trip to my favorite music store, Fingerprints, had turned up CDs by my old friends the Flatlanders and Terry Allen and one from the new-to-me Avett Brothers (thanks, Kit and Amy!).
[Updated 10:01 a.m. 10/18/10: An earlier version of this post misspelled the name of the Avett Brothers as Avette.]
The onions cooked and the music played. When the music was done, there was ‘Wallander’ on the DVR. When ‘Wallander’ was done, there was a Lakers game. I think they’re looking good.
Finally, just about halftime, a rich, warm smell announced that the onions were done. Now I’ve got a container of them waiting in the fridge for when I need them. I’m thinking maybe goat cheese pizza or a grilled cheese sandwich. Or maybe I’ll just add them to a soup or a stew. It certainly feels like fall.
