It’s National Guacamole Day

There are certain food holidays that speak to you, and I can’t resist creamy avocados mashed with spicy chiles, vibrant cilantro and bright lime juice. So, to celebrate National Guacamole Day, here’s our guacamole recipe.

The first step to great guacamole begins with ripe avocados. A ripe fruit will give when squeezed gently with the palm. Here’s more info on how to shop for, prepare and store avocados.

Traditionalists will make their guacamole in a molcajete, a lava stone mortar and pestle found in Latin markets and specialty cookware stores. I find that a shallow bowl and a fork will do the job just fine. Add guacamole to your favorite taco recipe, Mexican-inspired burgers or eat it plain with crunchy tortilla chips.
