Some things you just don’t have to comment on. …
Prior to Monday’s game the Dodgers sent right-hander Charlie Haeger back to the disabled list, saying his sprained right toe was still bothering him.
Haeger just came off the DL on Thursday. He originally went on with plantar fasciitis, but during his rehab work he injured the toe.
‘I just want to get back to the guy who started the season with us,’’ said Manager Joe Torre said. ‘He looked like he had more movement in spring training, even though in Arizona it’s not easy to throw a knuckleball. He just doesn’t look like the ball is dancing.’
Haeger is 0-4 with an 8.53 earned-run average in eight games, including five starts. He pitched two innings Saturday, allowing two runs, three hits and two walks
‘He keeps wanting to pitch, wanting to pitch, but you guys have seen it too,’ Torre said. ‘It doesn’t look like the catcher is having a tough time, and that tells me the ball’s not dancing. It has to be something physical because, you know, he started the season as one of our starters.’’
OK, sorry, we do have to comment …
Starting the season in the rotation hardly offers the credentials necessary to stay in the rotation. Pitching well is, and he has not pitched well.
The Dodgers keep putting him on the DL, either oddly believing in him or convinced if they try to send him down (he’s out of options) some team will claim him. I don’t think so.
It might be in Haeger’s best interest to just tell the Dodgers he’s willing to accept a minor league assignment and then go down to triple-A Albuquerque, get healthy and try to get his act together.
The Dodgers called Jon Link back up from Albuquerque to take Haeger’s spot for Monday. On Tuesday he’ll be sent back down when the Dodgers activate George ‘Invasion of the Body Snatchers’’ Sherrill.
