The Home section’s May 23 story on the landscaping at the Los Angeles Police Department’s new headquarters downtown generated a spirited response. As L.A. expands lawn-watering restrictions on its residents, can the city justify the presence of nearly an acre of turf at the LAPD site?

Designers defended the lawn, saying local residents need the green space. The grass will catch storm runoff in winter, be watered wisely in summer, reduce the heat-island effect and, they said, unlike many suburban lawns, this one actually will be used. Read some of the mail we received, however, and it’s clear critics are not convinced.
