Sometimes, stress begets success. Take the genesis of the Manana floor lamp by Marie-Louise Gustafsson, who already has won fans on this blog with her Carrie bike basket.

‘I had been pushing myself too hard for an exhibition, and I drew my own body in different shapes in order to relax,’ she explains in the new catalog for the manufacturer, Design House Stockholm. One of her armless stick figures became the basis for this kicked-back light, which is meant to lean against a wall. (For those with kids or earthquake fears, It has a hole in the back of the tubular upright to secure it to a nail.)

At 5.5 feet tall, with a movable shade and dimmer switch, it’s ideal for reading and ambient light. In an homage to its evolution from pencil doodle to product, the Manana is powder-coated in a matte graphite finish. It’s $220 at Show in Los Angeles.
