The fourth annual Gathering of Community Gardens at the Stanford Avalon Community Garden is a celebration marking the harvest season as well as Halloween and the Day of the Dead. Alex Alferov and Summer Titone, who built the harvest altar pictured at left last year, will be building one this year for the event.
The party is on Halloween from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. A carne asada buffet will use herbs and vegetables from the garden. A garden swap is planned, as are children’s activities. People are invited to come in costume.
The day is presented by the L.A. Community Garden Council. Admission is free, but a $10 donation is requested. For information call (323) 666-2137 or visit the council’s website.
The Stanford Avalon Community Garden is at 658 E. 111th Place, Los Angeles. Street parking is available near the garden entrance, off the 600 block of East 111th Place, and also off the 600 block of Lanzit Avenue.
Stanford Avalon Community Garden is a nine-acre garden that serves nearly 200 families, many of them former growers at South Central Farm, which closed in 2006 and became the subject of the film ‘The Garden.’
