Patio umbrellas for summer: We’re seeing a pattern

Patio umbrellas are available in nearly every conceivable color, but what if you’re looking for a distinctive pattern or print? We scouted some of the newest designs on the market and found that whether your look is a bold stripe, a refined damask or modern Scandinavian graphics, these textiles can be less about shade and more about fun. Take a look:

Designed in 1950, Appelsiini (‘orange’) pattern is one of the first created by designer Maija Isola for the Finnish textile studio Marimekko. The Appelsiini Caliente umbrella is made of weather- and UV-resistant spun polyester paired with a eucalyptus pole. It’s $209.95 at Crate & Barrel.

The 6-foot round Marimekko Appelsiini green umbrella is $149.95 at Crate & Barrel.

The 10-foot round Sunbrella Sanibel Free-Arm Umbrella with base is outfitted with wheels for easy positioning. It’s $750 at Crate & Barrel.


Frontgate’s 9-foot Damask umbrella in oyster is made of solution-dyed fabric embellished by hand with all-weather paints. It’s $795 to $895.

The Poolside stripe canopy from West Elm is made of waterproof and UV-resistant polyester. It’s just $79.99 and comes with a hardwood pole.

The classic stripe umbrella from Pottery Barn is made of fade-resistant and water-repellent polyester. It comes in 6- and 9-foot sizes and three pole options. Prices range from $179 to $279, and it’s sold only online.

The 9-foot Sunbrella Round Umbrella from Pottery Barn is made of acrylic that provides up to 98% UV protection. The pole come in eucalyptus, teak or aluminum. Prices range from $269 to $369, and the design is sold only online.


The Parker Stripe umbrella from Pottery Barn is made of fade-resistant and water-repellent polyester canvas. It’s $99 to $219.

Market umbrellas from Plow & Hearth come in a variety of fabrics. The 7- and 9-foot umbrellas range from $99.95 to $199.95.
