Four people, including two teenagers, were hospitalized Thursday after their car skidded off a mountain road and rolled down a cliff in Angeles Crest near Glendora.
Carlos Avila, 19, of Baldwin Park was driving south on Glendora Mountain Road near Big Dalton Road about 12:30 a.m. Thursday when he realized he was driving too fast for an approaching curve and hit the brakes, the California Highway Patrol reported. The front wheels of the Nissan Sentra locked up, sending the car off the roadway and about 250 feet down the mountainside.
The front passenger and one back passenger were thrown from the vehicle, CHP said. The other two occupants got out of the vehicle after it stopped.
All four occupants were able to walk up the hillside to the road, where they called 911, the CHP said. Los Angeles County firefighters responded and took all four to area hospitals.
The passengers thrown from the vehicle — identified as Luis Hernandez, 21, of Azusa and Jason Dominguez, 22, of Baldwin Park — suffered moderate head injuries and were flown via helicopter to Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center, CHP said. Avila and the other passenger, Kevin Padilla, 19, of Baldwin Park, were taken to Foothill Presbyterian Hospital for minor injuries.
The crash is still under investigation, but CHP said it initially appeared intoxication was not a factor. Avila was driving about 25-30 mph when he braked, the agency said.
