Lovable mutt Andre was in dire straits when he was found last winter. A woman followed a trail of blood and discovered the shepherd/Rottweiler mix, who’d been caught in an illegal trap and had chewed off the lower portions of two of his legs in his efforts to free himself.

Since then, things have gotten much better for Andre. He was taken in by the Alaska Dog & Puppy Rescue group and has gained 25 pounds (he weighed only 38 pounds when he was found). Best of all, a Denver-based company called OrthoPets has arranged to fit him with prosthetic legs.

Next up, after readjusting to four-legged life, Andre goes up for adoption. For video of him playing for the first time with his new legs, click the jump!
