Kristen Stewart has been cast alongside Garrett Hedlund and Sam Riley in a film version of Jack Kerouac‘s novel “On the Road,” according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Kerouac was a pioneering Beat Generation writer, along with Allen Ginsberg -- coincidentally, the James Franco-starring Ginsberg biopic “Howl” premiered at the Sundance Film Festival this year along with Stewart’s “The Runaways.” In “On the Road,” Stewart will play the wife of Hedlund’s character, Dean Moriarty, a fictionalized version of Kerouac’s friend, Neal Cassady.

Stewart’s next big premiere is, of course, “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse,” and she can be seen on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” with members of that cast on May 13 (more on that “Oprah” show in a post later Friday). Then her Bella won’t be seen again until “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn” hits theaters in November 2011.

Production on the $25-million “On the Road” starts in August, THR says -- giving those KStew fans who wish “Twilight” had gone straight to video something edgier to put on the calendar.
