After conquering the Venice International Film Festival with her latest offering, ‘Somewhere,’ Sofia Coppola‘s stateside opening was as cool and casual as the director herself.
Coppola brought her movie ‘home to Hollywood,’ as Focus Features Chief Exec James Schamus put it, where the Angeleno screened her film with cast members Stephen Dorff, Elle Fanning, Chris Pontius and Michelle Monaghan at Sunset Boulevard’s ArcLight Cinemas.
Monogrammed Louis Vuitton card stock greeted guests at will call, which held tickets and party passes for the family affair -- Coppola’s brother Roman served as a producer on the film. The film sees Dorff as an aging movie star confronted by the emptiness of his life in the form of his 11-year-old daughter, played by Fanning.
With ‘Somewhere’ filmed almost entirely on location at the Chateau Marmont, an intimate after-party naturally followed at the legendary hotel. Director and cast greeted the likes of Mena Suvari, Andy Garcia, Juliette Lewis, Benicio Del Toro, Chloe Sevigny, photographer Mario Testino and ‘Tree of Life’ actress Jessica Chastain.
In lieu of industry chatter and excessive shmoozing, the party was, by Ministry standards, most intimate. Folks chatted about when and how long they’d stayed at the hotel, greeted its owner Andre Balazs like an uncle and sipped freely of the bubbly that roved around the room.
There was even some residual glamour left for ‘Jackass’ star Pontius, cast as Dorff’s on-screen best friend. The actor showed off his sequined-lapel tuxedo jacket over a well-loved T-shirt.
Coppola herself rocked black sequins on a Vuitton gown, standing center stage in the patio with her family, colleagues and a stray hotel guest or two. We dare say she wore it best.
