‘Super,’ the James Gunn film with the guts to cast Rainn Wilson as a superhero, has traveled through the worlds of Comic-Con and SXSW on its way to theater screens -- but a premiere Monday in Hollywood suggests the film’s April 1 release date isn’t any April Fool’s gag.

Writer-director Gunn and Wilson -- whose character Frank D’Arbo transforms himself into the superhero Crimson Bolt -- hit the red carpet outside the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood with wife Holiday Reinhorn and costars Ellen Page, Liv Tyler and Nathan Fillion to mark the pending arrival of the independently financed feature.

Other faces from the cast included Mikaela Hoover, Greg Ingram and Michael Rooker. Aerosmith lead singer and ‘American Idol’ judge Steven Tyler turned out to support his daughter, who plays the wife of Wilson’s D’Arbo in the film, and also to support Gunn, who on Tuesday tweeted, ‘Steven Tyler was the nicest guy. He gave me a big hug. He’s a hero.’

Also spotted: Sarah Silverman, Virginia Madsen, Dr. Drew Pinsky, Tila Tequila and Sasha Grey, who said on Twitter, ‘a brilliant, authentic dark comedy. Rainn Wilson is comedic gold.’ Click the pics for more photos from the event.

‘Super,’ described by The Times’ Marc Olsen as ‘an alternately wild and moody film that is equal parts love story, portrait of mental instability and raucous comic-book-inspired action picture,’ had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September and screened at the South By Southwest festival in Austin this month.

The film opens in limited release -- mostly at theaters in L.A. -- on April 1, going wider week by week. It also will be available via video-on-demand.
