Adele, honey, you were smart to stay home while the American Music Awards’ red carpet dripped along Sunday night in L.A. -- though some who toughed it out got to see Justin Bieber smooch Selena Gomez in public, a moment that looked anything but chilly. The Biebs is, after all, his own weather system.

With part of the AMAs red carpet waterlogged from the Los Angeles rain, shivering pop stars found it a wet and chilly walk into the Nokia Theatre. Many women squished along in high heels, pulling up their dresses so they wouldn’t get soaked from below while rain pounded on the big white tent overhead.

Given that the rain was practically a monsoon by Southern Californian standards, spirits were a bit damp at the 2011 installment of the American Music Awards, and it probably didn’t help that Adele, the evening’s leading nominee, is recuperating from throat surgery and wasn’t in attendance.

But the show goes on, and winning a hunk of crystal warms the spirits, regardless of the weather. Karmin, the duo made up of Berklee graduates Amy Heidemann and Nick Noonan, snagged the AMAs’ inaugural New Media award. The cute couple stopped to chat for a minute and show off their trophy, speculating on its potential superpowers.

Providing the red carpet with a rare dose of wisdom gleaned from experience, Jon Secada, who’s currently working on an autobiography, passed on a few words of advice for up-and-comers.

In a world dominated by dance-pop, James Durbin, from the latest chapter of ‘American Idol,’ is staying true to hard rock, devil horns and all. That said, you might be surprised to hear who he was looking forward to seeing at the AMAs:

‘A lot of pop music is shock music,’ said Gavin DeGraw, adding that he’s attracted to melody. Figures, then, that he’d love to work again with One Republic’s Ryan Tedder: The two collaborated on ‘Not Over You,’ the summer’s weepy breakup tune.

With nominees Maroon 5 controlling the charts with their Christina Aguilera-boosted track ‘Moves Like Jagger,’ and the ceremony kicking off with bonkers starlet Nicki Minaj combining forces with dance titan David Guetta, collaborations were the hot ticket. Hot Chelle Rae dreamed about working with the likes of Katy Perry -- and explained why being from Nashville doesn’t limit a person to country music.

Best new artist nominee Miguel definitely carries a torch for Prince -- witness the dirty burn of his single ‘Teach Me’ for proof -- but he’s also excited about one day working with J. Lo.

Lastly, Cheryl Hines, who plays Larry David’s long-suffering and now estranged wife on ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm,’ mentions that Kelly Clarkson’s song, ‘Stronger,’ plays a little role in her new show, ‘Suburgatory.’

But that’s all she would tell us, much to the delight of whoever wrote the fine print on her ABC contract.
