The eminent and imminent M3 convertible

The new BMW M3 convertible is coming. And this time it will feature an electro-hydraulically retractable hard top, just like the regular 3-Series convertible. This model joins the sedan and coupe M versions and has the same 4.0-liter V-8 engine (that’s about 30 pounds lighter than the six-potter from the previous generation).

In European spec (U.S. specifications have yet to be released), horsepower is rated at 420 (at a high-revving 8,300 rpm) and peak torque is 295 pounds-feet. Although its predecessor had a canvas roof, this version sports a power-to-weight ratio that is 10% more favorable. So the car rushes to 62 mph in 5.3 seconds (top speed is an electronically limited 155 mph).

All the usual M-car sophisticated driver aids (such as electronic damper control, and throttle response and traction control maps) will be available, and there’s the optional double-clutch seven-speed transmission that outperforms a conventional manual in terms of performance, economy and emissions. But being a convertible, the car also gets BMW’s sun-reflective leather technology, so owners may leave the roof down for prolonged periods without the seats overheating. Perfect for Southern California.

The M3 convertible hits European showrooms in April, so don’t expect the U.S. to be too far behind.
