Foreclosure’s other victims: Renters

Sfvrealestate has been asking for this, and for good reason. David Lazarus’ column from today’s L.A. Times explains that renters are often victimized in foreclosures -- when a rented house is repossessed, the tenants are usually evicted. As he explains, tenants in some L.A.-area cities have special legal rights to fight eviction, but most of them don’t know that.

By one estimate, a quarter of all foreclosed homes in California are occupied by renters.

Profiled: a 40-year-old renter and father of two who moved out after being promised that at least he would get some ‘cash for keys’ money. One problem: He moved out and didn’t get the money right away, and is having a hard time scratching together enough cash to get into another apartment.
