Looking for an excuse to wear your red sequined Dorothy slippers? Or maybe that Christmas sweater just one more time? Macy’s has a deal for you. Now through Sunday, wear red and get 20% off most regular, sale and clearance purchases. Got nothing red in your closet? You can buy a ‘Red Dress Pin’ at the checkout for $2 and get the discount; proceeds will be donated to the American Heart Assn.

We visited the Macy’s at Sherman Oaks Fashion Square on Super Bowl Sunday and found some pretty hefty clearance deals -- up to 80% off some women’s apparel, if you were willing to dig through the rather disorganized racks shoved in the back corner of the store. But discounts of 40% to 50% were found on many brands, including DKNY and BCBG, in the main shopping space. Now Macy’s is advertising up to 90% off on some clearance items, and that’s before the wear-red bonus.

The department store chain recently said it would lay off 7,000 workers and close some stores, including one of its two locations in downtown Los Angeles, where a going-out-of-business sale is in progress with discounts between 30% and 60%. Looks like Macy’s is hoping an extra red discount will help it avoid red ink when earning season rolls around.
