Consumer columnist David Lazarus notes the harsh reaction to United Airlines’ plan to charge some obese passengers for a second seat if they can’t fit into the one they bought. That proposal also has sparked more talk of a fat tax for fliers.

With airlines shrinking seats as their customers continue to grow larger, all of this punitive fat talk is just plain mean.
