You may be eligible for a few discounts on your utility bill and not even know it.

In an effort to change that, the California Public Utilities Commission and local utility companies are hosting a series of free We Care California resource fairs across the state this week to inform people on how to get 20% or more off the cost of their gas, water and power bills. On Thursday and Friday the fairs will be coming to Southern California.

Southern California Edison is hosting a resource fair Thursday in Long Beach and Southern California Gas Company and Los Angeles Department of Water and Power will hold one on Friday in Los Angeles. Other utilities throughout California are hosting their own fairs this week in different parts of the state.

About 900,000 utility customers throughout California may qualify for the discount programs and not realize it, Southern California Edison said in a statement on the resource fairs.

One example of a program being advertised at the fairs is the Energy Management Assistance and Direct Assistance Program which offers discounts to households to conserve energy and reduce their electrical and heating costs, based on the level of a family’s income. Other programs offer the installation of energy-efficient appliances and equipment at no cost to customers.
