Scrambling to finish Christmas shopping by Dec. 25? The last-minute crowd is gold for the roughly 2,000 online merchants participating in Free Shipping Day this Friday.

Chains such as Bed Bath & Beyond, Kohl’s, Nordstrom, Best Buy and Toys R Us will send purchases made Friday anywhere in the contiguous United States for no charge by Christmas Eve. Many of the participating retailers have already been offering free shipping deals throughout the season and beyond.

Luke Knowles, creator of the event, says it’s even more of a consumer powerhouse than Black Friday. The event, now in its fourth year, is aiming to supplant Cyber Monday as the top holiday season sales generator.

Knowles says on the Free Shipping Day website that 90% of consumers spend more when they are offered free delivery while nearly half abandon their digital shopping cart when it comes with high shipping fees.

Retailers pulled in $942 million on Free Shipping Day last year, 61% more than the year before, according to ComScore. Black Friday sales increased 9% year over year to $648 million in 2010 while Cyber Monday saw a 16% bump to more than $1 billion.
