Congressional aides say the two top-ranking U.S. House Democrats fear Rep. Bart Stupak of Michigan may retire and are urging him to seek reelection.

Two Democratic House leadership aides told the Associated Press that Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Majority Leader Steny Hoyer called Stupak and encouraged him to seek a 10th term.

The aides spoke Wednesday on condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to publicly discuss the private conversations.

Stupak led some anti-abortion House Democrats whose last-minute support enabled passage of the healthcare overhaul.

He’s become a target for critics of the legislation. The Tea Party Express began a TV and radio ad campaign Wednesday and plans rallies in his district this week.
