Backed by ‘tea party’ activists and a wave of anti-Washington sentiment, Sharron Angle, a former Nevada state representative, won the GOP nomination to face Sen. Harry Reid, the Senate majority leader and one of the major political insiders in the nation’s capital.

The Associated Press projected Angle as the winner of the GOP nod. She defeated businessman Danny Tarkanian, scion of the legendary basketball coach, and former GOP chairwoman Sue Lowden to win the nomination.

Democrats hope Angle is too conservative to attract the kind of independent support needed to unseat Reid, who has been targeted by the GOP.

In the gubernatorial race, Gov. Jim Gibbons lost his bid to be renominated after his tenure was marked by a messy divorce. He is the first governor to be rejected by his own party in this election cycle and the first in state history to lose a primary.

Former federal judge Brian Sandoval won the nomination and will face Harry Reid’s son Rory, who won the Democratic nod Tuesday night.
