I heard earlier this week via email from one of the girls who made the hot pink sign for swimmer Eric Shanteau at this past Saturday’s open practice at Stanford University. The sign said ‘NBA Supports Eric Shanteau’ and, in cursive, added ‘Get Better Soon!’

Shanteau, who discovered shortly before the Olympics swim trials in Omaha that he had testicular cancer, carried the sign with him throughout a whirlwind of media obligations this past weekend. He qualifed for the team in the 200-meter breaststroke, finishing second behind Scott Spann.

As it turns out, NBA stands for North Bay Aquatics, a swim club located in Marin County.

The signmakers are Sasha Perigo and her friend Ariana Traub. Sasha, 13, said she is best in freestyle events. Her email said that Ariana, 12, prefers sprint freestyle and butterfly.

Why the sign? The girls simply felt that they had to do something for Shanteau, who made the team after missing out four years ago at the trials in Long Beach with two third-place finishes.

‘I’m glad he liked it! :)’ Perigo wrote in her email.
