BEIJING -- Another fascinating aspect of Larsen Jensen’s American record swim in the prelims of the 400-meter freestyle: His time of 3:43.10 equaled Ian Thorpe’s gold medal-winning effort in Athens four years ago.

‘I knew I had to go fast given what Taehwan [Park] and the other guys did in the heat before me,’ Jensen said. ‘I didn’t want to take any chances with the last heat going all best times, you know, leaving me in the dust. So I put a lot into it, really didn’t have much of a choice.

‘I would have preferred to go a little easier, but that being said, I’ve still got some gas in the tank for tomorrow.’
