There are some funny things you notice during the slow part of figure skating — that would be the couple of hours in which the skaters who have no chance of winning skate. Like tonight.

Jeremy Ten of Canada, the 2009 national bronze medalist, was an optimist. ‘It’s not over ‘til it’s over,’ he said. But it’s over for Jeremy, really. He’s not winning a medal. He used the music from the movie ‘August Rush’ for his long program skate. It was the music that Shawn Johnson used for her floor exercise program this year.

Denis Ten of Kazakhstan also skated early. The Tens aren’t related. Denis skated to Piano Concerto No. 2 by Rachmaninov, and said he doesn’t mind getting asked about whether he knows Borat. ‘I laugh,’ he said.
