It’s so hot that my home office, which is ventilated with two French doors onto a mostly shady part of my back yard, reached temperatures of 100 degrees at 5 p.m. Monday.

It’s so hot that scores of frazzled Silver Lake and Los Feliz residents lined up outside the historic Vista Theater Sunday afternoon a full half-hour before the day’s first showing of the teen flick ‘Superbad.’ There wasn’t a teen in sight. Pale tattoos baked in the harsh sunlight. Hipsters blinked stupidly behind oversized sunglasses. The guy in front of me said, in the slow diction of the sedated, ‘So what movie is playing?’ A 40-something woman, face flushed, began scratching at the glass doors like a crazed zombie, yelling ‘let us in!’ in a tone that contained not a hint of joke. Perhaps never before has a 1:40 showing of a three-week-old high school comedy basically sold out the Vista on a Sunday.
