Opinion: Position papers for the next president

This week the Times’ editorial board presents a series of pieces on the issues facing the next president as a lead-up to its endorsement for president. Some folks have already suggested that the board is in the tank for Barack Obama; others (yes, more than one) (hard to believe, I know) have accused us of being biased in favor of John McCain. The point of the series is to share our views of where the country is going and how we’d like it to be steered by whoever occupies the White House for the next four years.

We started the series Sunday by discussing what to do about captured ‘enemy combatants’ and the detention center at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba. Today’s installment is about the economy, looking in particular at John McCain and Barack Obama’s plans for relieving the credit crunch, stimulating the economy, cutting taxes, balancing the budget, restraining entitlement spending and dealing with our trading partners. Still to come are pieces dealing with the polarization of government, more domestic issues and foreign policy. Let us know what you think about the editorials on Gitmo and the economy, or tell us what we should keep in mind as we prepare to endorse Bob Ba... umm, whoever we decide to endorse.
