In Tuesday’s Letters to the editor, readers react to a Times story about how John McCain and Sarah Palin have tried to dial back some of the nastier talk on the trail.

Stephen Hariton, of Westlake Village, writes that civil rights legend Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) had it right when he remarked that his old friend McCain and running mate Palin were ‘playing with fire’:

If we are seeing the last gasp of a campaign that believes this is the only way it can rally its base, then what does this say about its base? Is this the type of campaign Jesus would have run? I think not.
