Happy holidays, readers! As close observers of the Los Angeles Times may know, this year marked the arrival of a new Letters Editor in the Opinion Manufacturing Division: Eryn Brown, a.k.a. your letters maven.

Each week for the past six months, Eryn has been tracking and reporting the subjects that have triggered the greatest outpouring of mail into the complex formerly known as Times Mirror Square. It’s become a regular feature here that we call the Letters Top Five. Friday, we’ll publish a year-end summary that will reveal the three most popular topics. Before we do, though, we thought we’d invite you all to guess the Letters Top Five for 2008. [*Or rather, the last half of it, at least, since we started keeping count.]

Submit your picks for the Top Five in the comments field below. We won’t publish them until Friday morning, when the summary runs in the print edition. The winner will be the one that comes closest to naming all five in the correct order. Also include the percentage each topic recieved of total letter volume, which we’ll use as a tie-breaker.

The winner will receive a bit of LA Times swag, which could soon become a collector’s item, depending on how the bankruptcy proceeding goes. We’ll also throw in a book because, let’s face it, you all obviously like to read. The deadline for entries is Thursday the 25th at 5 p.m.

Good luck!
