An audition is underway for perhaps the most prominent appointment in the Brown administration.

Sutter, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi who has been photographed with Gov. Jerry Brown and First Lady Anne Gust Brown in recent days, is currently trying out for the coveted job of Top Dog. Literally. The Browns have been poochless since the passing of their dog Dharma last year. (The Browns paid tribute to Dharma in their annual holiday card last year.)

Sutter, who belongs to Brown’s sister, Kathleen, the former state treasurer and current Goldman Sachs executive, has been living with the first family on a trial basis, according to the governor’s spokesman, Evan Westrup. Kathleen Brown is moving to Chicago to avoid any apparent conflicts between her business and her brother’s. Sutter, apparently, is not heading east with her.

Westrup said no official announcement on Sutter’s status is expected Wednesday.
