Senior Producer for Social Media, Special Projects Editor named

Below is the memo from Executive Editor for Interactive Meredith Artley announcing Andrew Nystrom’s appointment to the position of Senior Producer, Social Media, and Michael McGehee’s appointment as Special Projects Editor:

Andrew Nystrom, Senior Producer, Social Media

Andrew will be moving from his post as the Senior Producer of Travel into this new role. We are using “social media” to describe sites and services outside of we can use to engage new readers, spread the word about some of our best work, and do a better job of listening to the larger conversation on the Web. Think about Digg, Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, You Tube and other sites that provide opportunities for us to share what we do and better connect with readers. Andrew is going to take the lead in getting us out there. He’ll work all over the newsroom to share best practices, spreading easy and effective first steps. He will also identify ways to use participation on those sites to attract readers to our stories, photos, video, database projects, etc. He’s a natural for this position – he’s already done great work in this space with Travel’s Twitter feed, he’s been working closely with colleagues at the Chicago Tribune who have been leading in some smart social media practices, and he’s a general go-to guy for some of the cutting edge practices on the Web. Andrew will report to Dan Gaines.


Michael McGehee, Special Projects Editor

Michael will oversee many of our key initiatives and projects for the site. We’ll use his talents to help plan, guide and communicate projects such as event-based coverage, Web-only projects, and how we can best present some of our wonderful series. He’ll continue to work closely with the video and “cool kids” teams. He’ll work with Michelle Maltais to hook in KTLA to pull in video, and work with other Tribune properties. Michael will help prioritize all the great ideas that are coming at a faster, more advanced pace than ever before. He’ll collaborate with many editors, reporters and other folks in departments all around the company. Tactically, he will run the weekly editorial communications meeting and will be the keeper of a calendar of events that we can all consult. Many of you know that Michael has been performing parts of this role for a while now, so it’s a great thing to officially recognize that and thank him for more great work to come. Michael will report to Sean Gallagher.
