In football, pass interference is called when a defender unlawfully prevents a receiver from attempting to catch the ball. The penalty is a violation of space, in essence. ‘Friday Night Lights’ keeps violating my space -- the ability to enjoy the characters and fabric of a town that were so richly established in Season 1.

Has the show completely lost its way? No. But it definitely feels as if it has detoured.

This week found Lila Garrity showing up down Mexico way, where the paralyzed QB Jason Street is about to undergo a highly iffy miracle-cure surgery, with the brooding hottie fullback Tim Riggins along for the beer. Enter born-again Christian Lila, Street’s ex-fiancee, summoned by Riggins, her ex-fling, to talk Street out of the procedure.

Their successful intervention ended in an extremely suggestive three-way of tenderness at a honky-tonk bar, Lila seductively caressing Street, then brushing lips with Riggins, only to declare, ‘I gotta go pray.’

What do we have here, ‘Y Tu Lila Tambien’?

In the end, the trio went back to Dillon, Texas, where Landry Clark has recently been elected Mayor of Plot Points, and Matt Saracen pulled off an impressive two-fer, telling off Coach Taylor and then delivering a long-overdue diss to Coach’s daughter Julie for forsaking him for the Swede.

It was a nice moment for Saracen, even if it was his buddy Landry’s hour. LC had it all going on: He not only got to suit up for a game, he got in the game. And he not only got in the game, he gave a rousing speech about teamwork at halftime, eliciting that awesome chant, ‘Clear eyes, full hearts, can’t lose,’ echoing again in the Panther locker room.

And he not only got to suit up for a game, get in the game and give a rousing speech at halftime, but he also drew the pass interference call that orchestrated Taylor’s first victory back as coach.

But store up those electrolytes, Landry. ‘Cause here comes your formerly unattainable g’friend Tyra, breaking up with you on the night of your triumph.

Cloudy eyes, broken hearts....
