Exhausted after walking the picket line on crutches for an hour and a half, hobbled after breaking his left ankle, screenwriter Mike Scully took his second breather of the morning at 10:30 and reflected on his strike experience so far.

As an almost unending stream of cars and big rigs honked past Fox’s main studios, Scully admitted to being taken aback by the outpouring of public support.

‘I’m surprised by just how behind us people seem to be so far,’ he said. ‘I wouldn’t blame people for not caring or understanding what the issues are.’

Writer-director James L Brooks came up behind Scully just then, pointed at his crutches, and said: ‘Rupert Murdoch pushed him!’

Scully continued, ‘But I guess people understand this is about cutbacks and pensions and people not getting paid what they deserve. Those aren’t just showbiz issues. Those are corporate America issues.’
