Putting some money away

Adam Armus, 43, a writer and producer on ‘Heroes,’ said he had to have a talk with his daughters, ages 4 and 7, telling them that Christmas was going to be different this year.
‘Normally at this time of year we would be going shopping right now, but I’ve had to explain that ... we’re going to have to make some sacrifices this year so that we can have a better Christmas next year. And they totally understand.’
Armus said he had been saving money for several months in anticipation of the strike. He was marching at the same entrance to Sunset Gower Studios where a striker had his leg run over by an employee trying to get into the parking garage.
‘To hear about that was extremely upsetting,’ he said. ‘There’s no need for violence. I’ve been telling everyone it’s not worth it to get hurt.’
Oscar-winning writer Alan Ball (‘American Beauty’), who also created ‘Six Feet Under,’ was picketing at Hollywood Center Studios. ‘We’re all in solidarity,’ he said. Ball has been working on an HBO show, ‘True Blood,’ about vampires in suburbia. Joining him on the line was Tuc Watkins, who plays one of the neighbors on ‘Desperate Housewives.’
Watkins, a member of the Screen Actors Guild, said he wanted to support the writers. ‘I believe in standing up,’ he said. He said he had put some money away ‘and this is going to be a rough time financially. But there is a bigger issue at stake.’
