The third season of HBO’s therapy drama ‘In Treatment’ premieres Monday night, and for the first time, original characters will get head-shrunk by Dr. Paul Weston (Gabriel Byrne). Previous seasons of the show were based on the original Israeli series ‘Be’Tipul,’ which is why the third season’s writers are calling this ‘the first truly American season’ of the show.

Times critic Mary McNamara notices that they’re also facing particularly American issues -- immigration, identity crises, fear of aging -- with a thematic cohesion that ‘seems richer, though perhaps more familiar.’ Read her review of the new season below, as well as interviews with Byrne and the writers.
