Fans of Davy Jones and The Monkees remember the vintage TV series fondly. But far more obscure -- and mostly forgotten -- is the 1997 TV project which brought them together for perhaps the last time.
Jones and his three original bandmates got together for an 1997 TV special, ‘Hey, Hey, It’s The Monkees!’ which aired on ABC and was timed to the release of their new album, ‘Justus.’ The project was written and directed by Mike Nesmith, who mostly declined to join Jones, Micky Dolenz or Peter Tork on reunion tours.
The premise of the special was that the group had kept filming TV shows since its weekly TV series on NBC was canceled in 1968, but they didn’t have any place to air them. The show featured classic Monkees hits as well as songs for the new album.
Much of the humor recalled the old TV show, with their trademark banter and slapstick. One scene showed the group getting ready to play, only to be interrupted by a laugh track.
