Starz renews ‘Magic City’ for second season before it premieres

Good news for ‘Magic City’ fans. Starz has renewed the series for a second season.

Haven’t checked out the ‘Mad Men’-like series set in Miami Beach circa 1959? Don’t worry; you’re not alone. It hasn’t even premiered yet.

While HBO has made it something of a tradition to renew its new series after the first episode airs, Starz chief Chris Albrecht, formerly of HBO, has one-upped his old home by greenlighting a second season before any episodes have aired.

‘ ‘Magic City’ is a beautifully written, superbly acted, and visually stunning series, and we feel the quality of the work accomplished deserves a second season,’ Albrecht said in a statement. It probably didn’t hurt that the series has already been sold in 70 territories around the world.

The series was created by Mitch Glazer, screenwriter of ‘Scrooged,’ among other things, and stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan as hotelier Ike Evans, who finds himself heavily indebted to a cruel mob boss (played by Danny Huston) while still selling himself as a stand-up guy to his wife and children.

A mid-20th century family man leading a duel life? Sounds a bit like a certain New York City adman.

The show also stars Olga Kurylenko, Steven Strait, Christian Cooke, Jessica Marais, Yul Vazquez and Kelly Lynch. It premieres April 6.
