Joe Torre is in the playoffs.

The New York Yankees are not.

The three major New York tabloids -- the Daily News, Newsday and the Post -- made note of this in rather spectacular fashion, all of them putting Torre on their back covers for getting the Dodgers to the National League Championship Series while the Yankees are home. (In interest of full disclosure, Torre has to share the Daily News back cover with Manny Ramirez.)

If the pictures don’t tell the story, then all three newspapers have stories to tell the story.

Newsday says Hank Steinbrenner did Torre a favor by pushing him out the door.

The Daily News says Torre refuses to gloat but adds Larry Bowa thinks the Dodger skipper should. Columnist Mike Lupica says Torre left New York and took October with him.

The New York Post notes some of the same but says Dodgers appear to be focused more on Phillies than on Yankees.

Hard to believe.
